THE wind beneath the wings of Cebuano basketball superstar and six-time PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo has passed away.
This as Marites Fajardo, the mother of the gentle 6-foot-10 giant, passed away on early Thursday morning, August 12, 2021.
The development was confirmed by Fajardo’s longtime advisor, lawyer Baldomero Estenzo, who revealed that Fajardo called him up on Wednesday night, asking for help because Marites was having a hard time breathing.
“Actually, nanawag nako si June Mar pagkagabii, mga almost 11 na kay nagpatabang nga ma-admit ang iyang mama sa UC Med kay naglisod lagi kuno og ginhawa. Ako siyang giingnan nga kinahanglan idali lang una kini sa duol nga hospital aron ma-oxygen dayon kay layo-layo man kon iadto pa og UC Med,” said Estenzo.
The Fajardos live in Punamungajan, which is approximately 60 kilometers away from Cebu City. June Mar is currently in Manila, awaiting for the resumption of the stalled PBA season.
“Nadala siguro na pero wa kaabot. Pagbuntag akong gi follow up didto nako mahibaw-i nga namatay na diay,” added Estenzo.
The younger Fajardo’s affinity for his mother is well-documented. As a matter fact, Fajardo was never shy to admit that he was a “mama’s boy.”
Marites’ last public appearance was in 2019 when he accompanied June Mar when he received his sixth MVP award at the Leo Awards night.
“Sila lang naman ang aking motivation kaya ako nagsusumikap. Gusto ko silang bigyan ng magandang buhay, na di na nila iniisip ang pambayad sa kuryente at ibang gastusin,” said Fajardo during his acceptance speech of the 2019 MVP award.
Fajardo and his family have yet to release a statement as of this writing.
